Do you ever have story ideas that
you *don’t* want to write for some reason?
I have a story idea for angels and
demons, and I don’t want to write it. Why not? Because there’s so much history
and belief wrapped up in the topic, I’m going to make people unhappy no matter
what I do. And it’s a challenging story to tell. And those guys are demanding
characters! I tell you, they are not going to leave me alone until I *do* tell
their story (I have shared a little of this in previous posts, such as this little vision/vignette). So eventually I will. But right now, I resist and
reach for other ideas.
I have another idea, including a
couple of fantastic characters, but I am concerned it may be too derivative, so
although I have shared a few scenes, I am holding off writing the story until I
have more confidence in its originality. I think I’ll get there…
I don’t “do” horror. I don’t like
being scared. I don’t like graphic violence or blood and gore. Sometimes I have
story ideas that give me the serious heeby-jeebies. I don’t want to give them
more strength and life by writing them down.
Finally, I have really struggled
with the ending to my novel WIP. Sometimes, I resist starting a new story
because I think it’s a subconscious attempt to avoid addressing the hard work
of finishing the one I’m working on now. When I like the idea, I’ll make a few
notes and then file it away for later. The characters are usually content with
that (except for those demanding angels and demons!)…
So, how about it? Do you have
story ideas you *don’t* want to write?

I’ve heard many translations. Here’s one I love:
The light of the universe that shines within me recognizes
the light of the universe that shines within you.
The light of the universe that shines within me recognizes
the light of the universe that shines within you.

Writing report:
ReplyDeleteNovel editing, Ch34
Time: ~30 min
Yeah, I have some stories ideas I don't feel ready to write. I want to be a better writer before I tackle them. My current WIP had been one of those. I'm still not sure I'm up to it yet, but I gave it a go.
ReplyDeleteThen there are others that I don't think I'll ever write -- silly ones, or ones that are less ideas and more just random narration that I entertain myself with, but don't really want to write down, if that makes sense.
I'd love to see more of those angels and demons when you are up to wrestling them onto paper!
